Old maps are a thing of beauty and interest.
They show boundaries and horizons from yesteryear.
Many old maps are available as posters in museums and online. They are often printed through a 4-color process, which does not truly represent the old way of map printing, which was the woodcut press or copper plate print. The image was printed with black ink, then the cartographer would hand paint in the colors. Through the use of modern technology, it is possible to etch and cut leather and other materials with high precision.
Once a map is chosen, it is digitally optimized to be etched onto leather and then dyed. Once the piece is laser etched and cut, it is taken into the paint booth to be hand dyed with high quality pigments that are applied with hand brush and airbrush techniques. Each leather map in a series is unique due to the natural variations in the materials and hand dying process. These maps are a treasure to be enjoyed for many years. Etched on the back of each limited edition leather map is my signature, the series number and the date it was produced. There is a paragraph describing the map itself such as the original artists name and the year it was created. A second section briefly describes the media used and the process to create the leather version. This is the information that is provided to art galleries.
